SARI Maiden Conference Recap: Towards Sustainable National Development

A Historic Gathering

In March 2024, the Society for Animal Reproduction and Improvement (SARI) hosted its maiden conference at the University of Ibadan, Faculty of Agriculture. The theme — Animal Reproduction and Improvement in Retrospection: Towards Sustainable National Development — set the tone for a rich two-day programme of presentations, panel discussions, and networking.

Highlights

The conference featured contributions from leading academics and industry practitioners across Nigeria, with keynote addresses covering:

  • The state of animal reproduction science in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Policy frameworks for germplasm conservation
  • Technology transfer pathways from university to farm

Key Resolutions

Delegates adopted several working resolutions at the close of the conference:

  1. SARI shall establish an annual mentorship programme for early-career practitioners
  2. The society shall engage relevant government ministries on the regulation of imported semen and embryos
  3. A biennial conference cycle shall be maintained, with the next edition planned for Kaduna in 2026

Looking Ahead

The success of the maiden conference demonstrated both the appetite for a dedicated professional body in animal reproduction and the depth of expertise available within Nigeria. SARI invites all practitioners, academics, and industry stakeholders to deepen their involvement.
